"For A Few Demons More" by Kim Harrison/Hollows #5

Description:
Despite dating one vampire and living with another, Rachel Morgan has always managed to stay just ahead of trouble... until now.

Morgan's already complicated personal life -- living in an old church in the Hollows of Cincinnati with vampire Ivy Tamwood and a pixie named Jenks -- turns downright chaotic when an insane demon inexplicably ransacks her home, a mysterious murderer begins a brutal killing spree, and her best friend, Ivy, suddenly packs up and moves out.

After vampiric crime boss Piscary and villainous councilman Trent Kalamack learn about a demon-crafted artifact in Morgan's possession, she becomes the unwilling focus of an otherworldly power struggle that will change her forever.

For every action has its price, and when the demonic Algaliarept dares to walk openly under the sun, even Rachel Morgan can't hide forever.

My Review:

Rachel has herself a heap full of trouble, and this time she doesn't even have a clue what is happening. This novel is something of a return to Harrison's slightly disjointed story telling. The three main plots, 1. Werewolf killings, 2. Ivy/Kisten/Rachel love triangle, 3. What to do with the focus. While Harrison has these three narratives occurring at the same time, they seem very disjointed and I can't help but wonder at Rachel's rather slow intuition regarding the focus/werewolf killings. And while all three main story lines are happening in a little under a week, each plot seems singular and removed from the others, each occuring independently from the others. The book would have felt more authentic had these separate story lines been melded together into a seamless story where each plot influenced the next.

The character developement in this novel was much more significant and smoother than in previous. While the love triangle between Ivy/Kisten/Rachel is part of this equation the most of the developement is in response to the death of a main character. The death, which will remain shrouded in mystery even at the end of the novel, is a real stunner. This cliff hanger really leaves the reader craving more from this tumultuous series.

I also liked the introduction of the demon politics that seem to be happening behind the scenes on the other side of the ley lines. Harrison really seems to excel at creating believeable and interesting inter-species politics and relationships. I can tell that we will be seeing more of this, with an emphasis on demon politics, in the next novel.

Overall a slight step backward in the series with the falling off of the seamless story telling we found in book number four, but still a very captivating and fun read. Four out of Five stars.
